Richard Prince got his start taking Marlboro ads from the 1970s and removing the logo, thereby turning them into his own cowboy photographs. In the decades following, he came to be known as the godfather of “rephotography”. Prince’s work often features icons of American identity: cowboys, bikers, automobiles, celebrities, or nurses like those appearing on the cover of pulp novels sold at delis and newspaper stands. He has had retrospectives at the Whitney and the Guggenheim, collaborated with Louis Vuitton in 2008 for Spring ready to wear, and designed the cover for the final A Tribe Called Quest record. Prince currently lives and works in New York City.
