Vaughn Spann is a Yale MFA graduate. Still in his 20s, he’s already built a significant following including Takashi Murakami and The Rubell Family Foundation in Miami. Part of his painting practice is to create new mythologies around familiar symbols whether that’s a Dalmatian pattern, the letter X or (in this case) a rainbow. His first rainbow painting was dedicated to Trayvon Martin using skittles colors (the candy Martin was carrying when he was killed). Vaughn added a black band both in mourning and solidarity with the late Martin. The artist notes that a rainbow is often associated with Gay Pride or leprechauns or even teachings in the Rudolf Steiner school.
